Making Room for What Matters

From My Closet to Yours | October 2026

October always feels a little funny to me.

The calendar tells me we're moving into fall, but here in Houston, the weather sometimes has an entirely different opinion. I'm mentally ready for sweaters, richer fabrics, boots and all the wonderful things that come with this time of year. Meanwhile, I'm still checking the temperature before I get dressed because I know better than to trust the calendar.

We're also coming out of what our family affectionately calls Birthdaypalooza.

At the end of September between my brother's birthday, my youngest son's birthday, my birthday, my mother-in-law's, my mom's and my oldest son's, we have a pretty good stretch of celebrating. And I love it! I love birthdays, I love gathering with people, and I love having a reason to celebrate another year of someone's life.

But once the last candle has been blown out, I usually find myself thinking about how quickly everything moves.

Another year. Another season. Another set of changes I didn't necessarily see coming.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, I've been thinking about making room.

The Things We Keep

If you've ever cleaned out a closet with me, you know I'm not particularly interested in getting rid of things just for the sake of getting rid of them.

I don't believe a successful wardrobe is measured by how few pieces you own.

I've worked with women who have beautiful, extensive wardrobes that serve them wonderfully. I've also worked with women who have closets full of clothes they rarely wear. The difference isn't always quantity.

It's whether the things they've kept still belong in the life they're living.

And that can be a surprisingly difficult question.

Sometimes a piece represents a memory. Sometimes it represents money we spent and wish we hadn't. Sometimes it belongs to a version of ourselves we really loved, or perhaps one we're hoping to become again.

There are also those pieces we keep because they seem like things a woman should own.

You know the ones.

The jacket that's supposedly "essential." The dress that's perfect for someone else's lifestyle. The "sit down" shoes that are beautiful as long as you don't have to walk anywhere.

I've learned that a closet can become a collection of good intentions instead of a wardrobe that actually supports us.

And lately, I've wondered how often we do the same thing with our lives.

When Everything Feels Important

I'm in a season where the roles I've known for years are changing.

My boys are growing up. Motherhood doesn't disappear when children become more independent, but it certainly begins to look different. There are things they need from me now that are very different from what they needed when they were little.

I'm also building a business I care deeply about. I love the women we serve, the relationships we're developing and the opportunities God continues to place in front of us.

And I have a marriage, friendships, family, church, responsibilities and all the ordinary things that make up a life.

These are good things.

That's what makes it difficult.

Sometimes the challenge isn't deciding between something good and something bad. It's deciding which good things we're supposed to give our attention to in this particular season.

I can say yes to something worthwhile and still be saying no to something that matters more.

That's a lesson I am continuing to learn.

What Are We Choosing to Wear?

One of the passages that has become foundational to Infinite Image is Colossians 3:12–14.

It tells us to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, to forgive one another, and above all, to put on love.

I find it interesting that Scripture uses clothing to describe something we have to choose.

Because I know how intentional I can be about getting dressed.

I'll consider where I'm going, who I'll be with, what I need to accomplish and how I want to present myself. I'll think about color and proportion, fabric and accessories. I may even change my mind a few times before leaving the house.

But how often do I give that same attention to what I'm putting on spiritually?

In my morning reflections, I've been thinking about something I've started calling Spiritual SPANX.

Now, if you've ever worn SPANX, you know they're designed to smooth things out and help everything look a little more put together on the outside. And listen, I'm all for a good foundation garment when the outfit calls for one! 😂

But I've started wondering how often I try to do something similar with what's going on in my heart.

I can smile through a conversation while quietly holding on to resentment. I can act confident when I'm actually afraid. And I can tell everyone I'm fine when, if I'm being truthful, I'm struggling with something I haven't really dealt with.

It's a little like putting on Spiritual SPANX. I'm trying to smooth over the frustration, hold my insecurities together, or keep everything looking fine on the outside instead of allowing the Holy Spirit to transform what's happening underneath.

And here's what I've been realizing: God isn't asking me to get better at disguising what's going on in my heart. He's inviting me to surrender those things to Him so He can do the work I can't accomplish by simply managing my outward appearance.

Am I wearing patience into a difficult conversation, or just trying to look patient while resentment builds?

Am I bringing genuine kindness into a busy day, or simply being polite while frustration gets the better of me?

Am I making room for gentleness when someone needs a little more grace than I expected to give?

And am I choosing love when my schedule, expectations or frustrations are competing for my attention?

I wish I could tell you that at 46 I've mastered all of those things.

I have not.

Apparently, patience still needs a little tailoring around here.

But I'm learning that making room for what matters isn't always about removing something from our lives. Sometimes it's about being willing to examine what's underneath, even when it would be easier to smooth things over and move on.

Because I believe there's value in presenting ourselves well. I teach women that every day. But I also believe the most beautiful outward presentation can't replace the work God wants to do in our hearts.

And that's the kind of transformation I want to make room for.

A Different Kind of Edit

When we're working through a client's wardrobe, we don't begin with the assumption that everything needs to go.

We begin by looking carefully.

What's working? What's no longer serving her? What deserves more attention? What needs to change? And what has been overlooked simply because everything else is taking up so much space?

Maybe there's something valuable in asking ourselves those same questions beyond our closets.

What am I giving my time to because I've always done it?

What am I holding on to because I feel obligated?

What deserves more of my attention in this season?

And where might God be asking me to make room for something different?

I don't think the answers are always obvious. Sometimes we need time, prayer, honest conversations and a willingness to admit that what worked beautifully in one season may not be what we're called to carry into the next.

That's not failure.

That's growth.

As we move toward the end of the year, I don't want to fill every available space simply because there's an opportunity to fill it.

I want to be more intentional about what I say yes to, what I keep close and what I allow to shape the woman I'm becoming.

I want my home, my calendar, my relationships, my business and yes, even my wardrobe, to reflect what matters most.

And maybe that's a good place for all of us to begin this fall.

Not by asking what else we need to add.

But by looking at what we've already been given and considering how well we're stewarding it and g.

Until next month,

Less Stressed. Better Dressed.
